Should This Skater Relocate for Skating?
I received this question a few days ago:
"My daughter is just getting ready to test Juvenile. She is 13 1/2 years old. Our rink has no ice dance, no partners, and no synchronized skating. She wants to go on with her skating, but there is nothing here for her. Given her age and test level, would it be worth it to move to a town that offers these disiplines? Has she she gotten too old to be competitive? Our highest level coaches only skated to Juvenile, and that was 30 years ago. Our club is currently ISI, with practically no US Figure Skating."
In my opioion, if this skater wants to follow her dream, she is going to have to move. What are your thoughts?
Further Reading:
- It sounds like if she wants to pursue skating, she would have to either commit to traveling long distances on a fairly regular basis, or move. However, either of those options are difficult for the entire family, expensive, and it's important to have your goals in mind when pursuing it.
- She should not move because she can teach herself if she is that old.
- No, she should not move. Realistically she is not going to be able to be very competitive. If she loves to skate and wants to learn to skate, she can do that where she is. Stay put and see how well she does in competitions this year. If she wins all the ones she enters, then revisit the moving idea. It is such a sacrifice and burden to the family that you have to make sure that it is going to pay off. Another idea that will allow her to explore her abilities without moving is to enroll her in a skating summer camp. She can get a taste of higher level figure skating and the commitment that it involves.
